McDonalds Original Sign Face Gets A Facelift

With its swooping roof and golden arches, the McDonald’s restaurant in South Bethlehem Pennsylvania contacted Sign Crafters to update their original porcelain panels.

Richard and Maurice McDonald opened their first restaurant on May 15, 1940, in San Bernardino, California. It was called “McDonald’s Barbecue Restaurant.” Ray Kroc joined the company in 1954, and in 1961 he purchased the chain and well, the rest is history.

In 1948 McDonald’s “Speedee” character was developed. To date, it’s not clear when they stopped using “Speedee” however as of 1967 he was no longer part of their sign.

In 1952 McDonald’s was in the market for a new building design that achieved both higher efficiency and eye-catching appearance, and the “golden arches” were born.

With all of this being said, Sign Crafters relationship with McDonald’s began in the 1950’s. At that time, we fabricated our first sign for McDonald’s. We are very proud of our continued relationship with McDonald’s over the years.
