Band Saw Blade Types

The kind of cut you need depends on the blade you use. A band saw blade with smaller "teeth" closer together is best for cutting metal and aluminum, while a blade with larger teeth is more appropriate for cutting wood. Different cuts are based on the number of teeth on your blade and how far apart those teeth are. Here are a few descriptions of band saw blades and their tooth size:

Regular - These blades are made with straight teeth with deep gullets between each tooth. Regular tooth band saw blades are used for general metal cutting and creating smooth cuts in woodworking.

Hook - These blades also have deep gullets, but unlike the regular tooth blade, a hook tooth band saw blade is widely spaced and designed for coarse cuts at high speed. These blades cut hardwoods and plastics.

Skip - While these blades look similar to the hook tooth blade, skip tooth blades have a straight tooth and a sharp angle where the tooth and gullet meet. These blades are used for woodworking and cutting soft metals.

Variable - These band saw blades have teeth that vary in angles and gullet depths. The teeth on the variable blades help reduce vibration and are an all-purpose blade for woodworking.
